The Canberra Ukulele Band (CUB) was established in 2016 as a not-for-profit community group, bringing together like-minded folks across age and gender, around the versatile and popular ukulele.
Our main focus is on having fun and enjoyment, playing and singing a wide range of genres from traditional to modern, and catering for a wide range of abilities from beginners to the more advanced. At CUB, we promote the health benefits of playing a musical instrument in a community setting.
FAQs
Why the term “Band”?
This is not about being a “performance band”, but rather a “band of merry ukulele players” – much like Robin Hood’s band of merry men (but your belongings are safe!) Having said that, there are opportunities to participate in several public performances throughout the year.
When and where do you meet to play?
We conduct our player sessions every 2nd and 4th Sunday of the month at Eastlake Footballl Club, 3 Oxley Street, Griffith. Our sessions begin at 1:15pm Folk tend to arrive around 1:00pm and commence chatting together about their week and what’s been going on. A goodly number of folk will have enjoyed lunch together down in the Bistro at Eastlake Football Club from around 12:00pm and then wandered upstairs to the session which begins at 1:15pm.
Am I welcome to just “turn up”?
CUB is definitely an “open group”. All are welcome. We do not maintain a “membership list” and there are no membership fees. There is a $5.00 door charge for all those attending, with the first attendance being a freebie. We encourage all members of the Canberra Ukulele Community to come and join in with our rollicking Sunday Sessions, even if you attend other local ukulele groups. We support our various Canberra Uke groups – collectively we offer a variety of playing experiences between us, and variety IS the spice of life!
How do your player sessions “work”?
Ukemeister Garry has arranged all song sheets to be projected on the large screen at the front which is used by many of the players. Others prefer to either print out the sheets into book form and bring along with their music stand, or download onto their tablet devices. The song sheets for the session normally comprise about 18 songs and are selected to be playable by all players, with a few more challenging songs mixed in to keep us on our toes. The song sheets are available for download from the CUB Website and are also sent to folk on the email list, about a week prior to the session.
What opportunities are there to “participate”?
We do encourage players to join us at the Karaoke Microphone to lead or join-in a song with their singing and playing. Folk are even occasionally seen to down their ukes, and join in some dancing! Nutbush City Limits somehow seems to cause this behaviour!
There are opportunities to participate in occasional CUB public performances.
Opportunities also exist to help out behind the scenes in a number of ways … chat to the person on the door, or Ukemeister Garry about what might currently be in need.
